A train full of thoughts

What's this blog about?

I've been thinking about starting this blog for years. So long in fact, that I actually can't even remember when I bought the domain name!  When I was working, I was a commuter and had a long (by Scottish standards) train journey each day.  There were some amazing views from the train, yet I hardly ever looked out the window. Instead, I generally read work documents or emails to get ready for the day ahead or to get caught up and finish stuff off before arriving home.

In some ways, the journey felt like a metaphor for life.  We can spend so much time focused on moving forward, that we forget to stand still and appreciate the view.  Thinking too much about tomorrow that we miss out on today.  However, some days the journey provided opportunities to reflect on life, the universe, and everything.  The idea for this blog sprung from that.  It was initially intended to be a collection of my random "thoughts from the train", blogging about them the day I had them. But I never seemed to have the time.  Then, at the end of 2021, I retired, stopped getting the train, and ironically, finally had time to think about this properly!

There are two main blog themes.  The first remains true to the original idea; a collection of random "thoughts about...." life, the universe and everything.  The second is about golf and largely my progress as I continue the lifelong journey of learning and improving.  That part of the blog started out as my “Quest for Scratch” but has evolved as I've moved through the writing process and has now become "Golfing with Gratitude".  I find that the challenges of golf have a lot in common with life in general, so many posts apply to both.

I hope you find some interesting content and if you do, then please subscribe for regular updates when new blogs are published.  I hope to average one post a week, so I shouldn't clog up your inbox with update emails!  There's also a contact form for anyone who might want to reach out to me directly and a "let's chat" button but I'm not sure how effective that will be!
